In 2015, Challenge Cancer UK have chosen to support 10 national cancer charities who invest in, or provide, awareness, prevention, research, treatment, support, and care to those affected by cancer – Cancer Research UK, Macmillan, Marie Curie, The Eve Appeal, The Christie, Prostate Cancer UK, CLIC Sargent, Melanoma Focus, Anthony Nolan, Teenage Cancer Trust – each receiving an equal share of 60% of the monies we raise*. The remaining 40% will be used to support our own Awareness and Prevention Programme, as well as a number of local and regional causes
*Our charity beneficiaries are in place for the 12 months of our financial year, which runs from 1st January through to 31st December. Who we support is a decision taken by our board of trustees after careful consideration, and to always ensure that the charities and causes we support reflect our aims and objectives, and are for the public benefit.
Our chosen 2015 beneficiaries
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating more than 40,000 patients a year. Because of its specialist nature, 26% of patients are referred to The Christie from outside Greater Manchester and Cheshire. The Christie is also an international leader in cancer research and has been pioneering world-first breakthroughs for over 100 years. It runs one of the largest radiotherapy facilities and the largest early phase clinical trials in the world and the biggest chemotherapy unit in the UK. The Christie also offers specialist surgery for complex and rare cancers and was the first hospital in the North West to introduce robotic surgery. Through the impassioned dedication of its staff, volunteers, members and charity supporters, The Christie is committed to helping all those affected by cancer, both now and in the future.
Prostate Cancer UK
Prostate Cancer UK fights to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. We support men and provide vital information. We find answers by funding research into causes and treatments and we lead change, raising the profile of the disease and improving care. We believe that men deserve better.
Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way. We are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The fundraisers who make it all possible. Together, we are Macmillan Cancer Support.
We save the lives of people with blood cancer who need a stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant.
We’re a unique team. Thanks to the remarkable donors on our register, our pioneering research and our passionate fundraisers, we give the chance of life to three people a day.
But we won’t stop there. We are determined to be there for everyone who needs a transplant; from finding a match, through every step of a patient’s transplant journey. Thank you for being part of it.
The Eve Appeal
The Eve Appeal is the only national UK charity dedicated to funding world-class research and raising awareness of all five gynaecological cancers. In the UK, 53 women are diagnosed and 21 die each and every day from a gynaecological cancer - yet funding and awareness of these diseases remains low. We are determined to change this by funding research focused on developing effective methods of risk prediction, earlier detection, and improved treatment and care that will ultimately save women’s lives not only in the UK but around the world
Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK are the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. We carry out world-class research to improve our understanding of cancer and find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer. We help people to understand cancer, the progress we are making and the choices each person can make. Our ground breaking work has saved millions of lives and our research is vital if we are to save more lives in the future.
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families. We provide clinical, practical and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. We are there from diagnosis onwards and aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.
Given the choice, most of us would want to be cared for at home or in a hospice if we were seriously ill. Marie Curie Cancer Care makes this possible. Our nurses give free hands-on care to people with all terminal illnesses in their own homes or in one of our nine hospices, and they provide vital emotional support to their loved ones. We allow families to make the most of the precious time they have left together.
Formed in October 2012 as the result of a merger between two well-established charities, Melanoma Focus is now the principal UK melanoma charity. We differ from other charities in maintaining a professional core, consisting of melanoma scientists, clinicians and nurses, in combination with our public information services and activities. The charity’s unique national educational events assist the UK melanoma community to achieve a greater knowledge of the illness, whilst raising funds to assist in the fight against skin cancer, and to enhance our understanding of the disease.
Teenage Cancer Trust
Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. They need expert treatment and support from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer.’ We’re the only charity dedicated to making this happen.
